In commercial settings, regular inspection and maintenance of floor stainless steel grilles are essential for the overall performance of the building. What’s more, routine checks help identify when replacements are necessary. Which in turn prolongs the lifespan of the HVAC system, enhances safety, and ensures that aesthetic standards are upheld.
As an experienced Mechanical Services Contractor, our services were recommended by our client the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich for a project at the Cutty Sark.
The task involved supplying and installing new stainless steel grilles and supports, replacing the old grilles that had deteriorated over time.

Stainless Steel Grilles Replacement in London
The brief
Removal of 130 metres of existing grilles, cleaning of the supports, and replacement with Linear Stainless Steel Grilles, including the installation of side support angle trims and mitred end frames. All work was completed outside of operating hours, ensuring no disruption to the public while the historic vessel remained closed.
Services Overview
Our team provided a comprehensive solution to replace the damaged stainless steel floor grilles while ensuring minimal disruption to the Cutty Sark, a historic London site. Additionally, by working after hours when the vessel was closed to the public, we ensured that the project progressed smoothly without interfering with visitor schedules.
Firstly, we began by assessing the area to fully understand the project’s requirements. Once the work commenced, our team worked efficiently each night, installing approximately 10 metres of new grilles per shift.
Removal and Preparation of Stainless Steel Grilles
Each night our engineers carefully lifted the existing grilles, setting them aside for removal. We then thoroughly vacuumed and cleaned the supporting areas beneath the grilles, ensuring the surface was ready for installation. The edges of the floor tiles were also cleaned, and any damaged tiles were replaced by our FES team.
Installation of Supports and Grilles
After cleaning, we installed angled support brackets to protect the edges of the floor tiles to prevent damage to the edge of the floor tiles. We then supplied and fitted cross-bearing supports beneath the new stainless steel grilles to ensure stability and durability.
Post-Work Cleanup
Each night, after completing our tasks, we made sure the site was cleared and cleaned, ready for occupation the following day. All redundant items were disposed of each night at a licensed refuse/recycling facility.
